Loyal readers know that Pete joined up at the Anytime Fitness in Ortley Beach on May 19th, and has served as its spokesperson and blogger in the ensuing time. Recently, cameras were on hand for Pete’s official two month weigh-in and body fat analysis. Now we are proud to report that Pete’s efforts have resulted not only in a 14 pound weight loss, but also in a body fat reduction to just 17.7 percent. This percentage puts Pete over the border from the “fair” column to the “ideal” column. With a total overall weight loss goal of 30 pounds of fat, Pete is just about half way there. This achievement was not without hard efforts. To achieve this goal, Pete consulted with many trainers at Anytime Fitness, including owner, Dr. Chris Capo, and trainers Chuck Danfield, Gabriella Dvorszakova and Adam Salamon. Pete’s routine includes weight lifting and abdominal exercises at least 3 times a week, as well as a specialized cardiovascular routine a minimum of five times a week. This activity is done at an 80% heart rate, burning 100 calories every five minutes while speed walking on an inclined treadmill. (Pete record calorie burn is 1,080 calories in 51 minutes.) Additionally, Pete is very fond of the Anytime Fitness speciality, a very delicious, very good for you drink, the 280-calorie Peanut Butter Peel, which is a mixture of banana protein powder, ice, natural peanut butter, and other ingredients.

Despite having to end two hours early, Ocean County Water Safety Day was otherwise held as planned on Wednesday July 18, 2007 . The event was held at Hiering Avenue and The Boardwalk in Seaside Heights. Water Safety Day is a combined effort of many groups, including The Ocean County Office of Traffic & Engineering, The Ocean County Security and Health Departments, The Seaside Heights Office of Public Relations and others. All year long, plans are made for the annual event, which highlights Water Safety, but also encompasses other types of summer safety including bike safety, the use of sunscreen and others. Experts were on hand from 7 a.m. to inspect passing bicycles. Safety items such as tire pressure, brakes, and the condition and maintenance of the chain were examined. The Ocean County Health Department was on hand to remind passersby of important summer safety measures, such as drinking enough water and using sunscreen. To protect skin from the dangers of overexposure to the sun, experts recommend the use of sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher, depending on skin type. Members of the SCUBA team of Station 44, The Seaside Heights Volunteer Fire Department were seen on the beach, displaying their equipment. Due to a pop-up thunderstorm, Water Safety Day 2007 came to an abrupt end before the big hit of midday passersby were to have arrived. Hopefully Water Safety Day 2008 will bring better weather for this important and informative day.

Police tape can be seen at the Casino Arcade, close to where a suspicious suitcase was investigated, but determined not to be dangerous.

A sign of the times in this post-September 11, 2001 world is the seriousness that authorities take when dealing with potentially suspicious items. Such an incident occurred recently near the Grant Avenue and Ocean Terrace in Seaside Heights, near the Casino Pier, on the evening of Monday July 16th. Deemed suspicious, the area surrounding the suitcase was isolated by the Seaside Heights Police and Fire Departments while bomb squad officials examined the contents. Although the suitcase turned out to only contain clothes and other innocent items, the roads surrounding the area, and the Casino Arcade were closed off for several hours during the investigation.
