Seaside Heights Water Utility customers received some sticker shock when they opened their bills in 2018.

“The Water Utility has been underfunded for years, leading to the increase.” said Councilman Harry M. Smith.

Mayor Dr. Anthony Vaz is now forming a focus group of citizens to re-vamp the rate structure and make it more fair to everyone.

“It’s like a mortgage.” said Mayor Vaz. “We have to come up with a certain amount of money per year to keep the utility going.  We have some year-round residents, some that just come for the warmer months, and businesses to consider.”

The Seaside Heights Water Utility requires a full-time staff in the office, the water tower and facilities, water treatment plant and in the field of the 3/4-mile long by 1/2 mile wide Borough.

Councilman Lou DiGuilio, retired Seaside Heights Director of Public Works, “who knows more about the water utility than anybody.” according to The Mayor, will lead the focus group.

A hearing about the water rates will be held at the monthly meeting of the Seaside Heights Property Owner’s Association, at 8 p.m. Friday, April 6th at the Seaside Heights Community Center, 1000 Bay Boulevard.  Speaking will be Mayor Vaz, Borough Administrator Chris Vaz, Councilman DiGuilio and Brian Hoffnagle, lead technician for the water department.

Mayor Vaz says he hopes to have new water rates in place by November 2018.

The Mayor and Council is very concerned and proactive about this issue, said Mayor Vaz.

The 1975, a British alternative band that has the #1 album in both the United Kingdom and the United States this week, will play the beach in Seaside Heights June 18th.
The album is titled, “I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It”.
The news was released by Seaside Heights Borough Administrator Christopher J. Vaz on Monday March 7th at 10 a.m.
The 1975 thing is huge, and they blew up overnight. They are playing all these major cities and then Seaside Heights.” an insider said.
The festival headlined is called, “Shadow Of The City”. The group’s latest single is called Sound.
Seaside Heights hosted a huge and successful concert with another British phenomenon in June 2015: Mumford & Sons and their “Gentleman of the Road” tour.
Other bands in the festival will be announced March 14th.
The group’s name comes from some writing found on the back of a book read by lead singer Matt Healy. The book, by beat poet Jack Kerouac, read, “1 June-The 1975”.
