Seaside Heights Water Utility customers received some sticker shock when they opened their bills in 2018.

“The Water Utility has been underfunded for years, leading to the increase.” said Councilman Harry M. Smith.

Mayor Dr. Anthony Vaz is now forming a focus group of citizens to re-vamp the rate structure and make it more fair to everyone.

“It’s like a mortgage.” said Mayor Vaz. “We have to come up with a certain amount of money per year to keep the utility going.  We have some year-round residents, some that just come for the warmer months, and businesses to consider.”

The Seaside Heights Water Utility requires a full-time staff in the office, the water tower and facilities, water treatment plant and in the field of the 3/4-mile long by 1/2 mile wide Borough.

Councilman Lou DiGuilio, retired Seaside Heights Director of Public Works, “who knows more about the water utility than anybody.” according to The Mayor, will lead the focus group.

A hearing about the water rates will be held at the monthly meeting of the Seaside Heights Property Owner’s Association, at 8 p.m. Friday, April 6th at the Seaside Heights Community Center, 1000 Bay Boulevard.  Speaking will be Mayor Vaz, Borough Administrator Chris Vaz, Councilman DiGuilio and Brian Hoffnagle, lead technician for the water department.

Mayor Vaz says he hopes to have new water rates in place by November 2018.

The Mayor and Council is very concerned and proactive about this issue, said Mayor Vaz.
