shuttlelaunch-copy2.jpg
HOISTING HARMONY TO THE HEAVENS, AND OPENING NEW GATEWAYS FOR INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE…Pete saw the liftoff of the Space Shuttle Discovery STS-120 on October 23, 2007 as part of a day long tour of the Kennedy Space Center. The mission proved to be one of the most historic of the entire shuttle program. When the Discovery docked with the International Space Station, it was the first time that both the shuttle commander (Pamela Melroy) and ISS comander (Peggy Whitson) were both women. Not only did Discovery deliver its payload of the Italian-built “Harmony” mode for the ISS, but it performed an unexpected and complicated repair to a solar panel that threatened the entire ISS building process.

Later, Pete shared his experience watching the launch of Discovery with Seaside Heights 4th graders.

sicko.jpg
For a second time, Seaside Heights has been featured in a documentary by controversial and political filmmaker Michael Moore. In 2002, Shoot The Geek, at Dupont Avenue and The Boardwalk was featured in the Moore film Bowling For Columbine. Now in 2007, Captain Hook’s Bar at Kearney Avenue & The Boulevard has been featured in the new Moore film, Sicko, which is currently in theaters nationwide. Sicko is a criticism of the United States for-profit healthcare system, and compares the U.S. to places with Socialized Medicine, such as Canada, France, and even Cuba. Part of the film deals with the the plight of the volunteer workers at the World Trade Center site that have suffered severe health problems in the ensuing time, and also sometimes find themselves without health care. Readers may remember the benefit for Joe Piccurro of Toms River that was held at Captain Hook’s on February 24th. Mr. Piccurro had been an iron worker that had reported to the pile of the collapsed WTC to cut through debris to free the bodies of dead police, firefighters, and civilians. Since that time, Mr. Piccurro has developed chronic bronchitis, and leukemia, and has had to endure a slew of red tape to get Worker’s Compensation benefits. According to Captain Hook’s management, Moore himself was not at the bar, but his cameras were present during the Piccurro benefit, filming the footage that appeared in Sicko.

Warmest Wishes from Seaside Heights Mayor & Council…

December 16, 2007

warmestwishes.jpg
The Seaside Heights Mayor & Council wishes everyone the most warmest wishes this holiday season.

Warmest wishes from the Seaside Heights Mayor & Council: Seaside Heights Mayor Ken Hershey and the six Council members: William Akers, Joyce Camera, JoAnn Duszczak, Arline Ottoson, Richard Tompkins and Agnes Polhemus want to extend the warmest wishes to Borough residents, extended friends and visitors this holiday season. The governing body is proud of the beautiful decorations that are now on display along the Boulevard and on the lawn at Borough Hall. Seaside Heights had once been well renowned for its Boulevard display, but after many years, the decorations were weathered, and almost all had to be replaced. A few years back, the council members put out a mandate to the Office of Public Relations for more color on the Boulevard. For each of the last two years, $10,000 has been budgeted for the purpose of new pole decorations. Now that two years have passed, the difference along the Boulevard is dramatic with the 40 4-foot snowflakes that have 1,760 twinkling lights. The project however, is not completed. Current plans are to purchase 34 4-foot candy canes and bells for the center poles on the Boulevard that do not have snowflakes for 2008. Additionally, a top secret, over the top display is planned for next season at the entrance into the Borough at Sumner Avenue.
