What to Expect for Mardi Gras 2007…

Most people associate Mardi Gras with being a winter holiday, but not in Seaside Heights. The actual date of Mardi Gras is usually in February or March, times not usually feasible for an outdoor celebration at this latitude. So in Seaside Heights, Mardi Gras has traditionally been held the second week in September to take advantage of the usual great weather expected during this first weekend of the shoulder season. The tradition of Seaside Heights Mardi Gras, which was huge in the 1970’s and early 1980’s had fallen to the wayside for a few years. But in 2007, The Seaside Heights Business Improvement District is re-instituting Mardi Gras Weekend. Mardi Gras will be held Friday September 7th, Saturday September 8th, and Sunday September 9th. Friday night will feature a decorating contest at all the area bars, restaurants, and nightclubs. As a promotion from sponsors, area bars will feature $2.00 Coors Light and $2.00 Jagermeister shots Friday. Saturday will begin with children’s entertainment along the Boardwalk. At 4 p.m., a parade with prizes will be held along the boardwalk. Weather permitting, at 8 p.m., fireworks will be displayed. Sunday will commence with the annual BID Seafood Festival on Grant Avenue as well as the annual car show sponsored by the Ocean County Vintage Automobile Club, linking these popular events with the newly-restored Mardi Gras. Early advertising has created a long-standing buzz and anticipation for Mardi Gras weekend is high.
